This is the book I've been stuck on, I picked it up in April and for a whole slew of reasons, it was just very hard to find any peace to read. But now I've finished the last chapter. Oh yeah right, you're probably wondering what book it was. It was the Culture Code by Daniel Coyle.
Directly on the cover, there are some strong words of praise by authors whose names I recognize. So I just had to pick it up.
At this point, I can't honestly say I remember very much to take with me from it. Most of it felt like common sense at this point. It contains some stories about successful groups - Pixar, SEAL Team Six. Some heartwarming stories about football hooligans feeling welcomed abroad and one about a health care company doing the right thing.
In summary, any group who wants to succeed need to actually think about succeeding, and not bury their noses in work. Feeling a drive to be better than you were last week, and feeling safe enough to dare and try to be better. Sometimes when you try, you fail - and learn. Encouraging feedback and discussion around this learning opportunity is what makes you better. Make values and priorities clear, and the team will work towards them. Rehearse and practice, and the quality of the work will improve.
I hope you don't take this blog post too seriously if you are deciding on reading this book or not. Don't let my inability to sit down in peace and quiet to read impact your decisions. :)
